What's New

Updated 11-19-01 - Updated Owners Directory, added info provided by Ray Shull on the South Coast 21, adding great info on that model.

Updated 10-09-01 - Moved website to http://southcoastus.8m.net due to heavy traffic and Geocities turning the site off from time to time due to heavy file transfer rate. Redirection page remains on Geocities server.

Updated 08-26-01- Added item in Equipment page,

Updated 08/13/01-Update weblinks, added South Coast Yacht Community (MSN) and Permasite.org/Southcoast weblinks.

Updated 08/06/01- There have been fourteen new members added to the owners list. Add them to your addressbook.

Updated 07/22/01- Added an Equipment page to the site for finding and ridding yourself of equipment. This is for individual equipment items, not for boats. Owners should contact each other through email to make arrangements.

Updated 07/20/01- Added membership page for mail forms, pressing the submit button will send an email with the completed data to our website.

Updated 07/02/01- The Owners Directory format has been changed, although email addresses have yet to be verified or updated, the directory has been changed to Model / Owners Name, email and sailing area/ photo. This will help in locating owners with the same type of boat. The sections are also alphabetized. Hope this helps.

Updated 06/24/01- Rory has graciously transferred the website to John Garrison, SC22 #201, to keep the website going, as he has too many other responsiblities at home and work to keep him from maintaining the webpages. He will still be using his webspace at Geocities.com but he will be using it for other purposes. There will be a redirection page to the Association's new location - so update your bookmarks. There is now a South Coast webring to facilitate hitting the other websites that owners have made over the last few months. Be sure to visit them, each one has a different flavor and different topics and faqs.

Updates 10/05/00 - Several South Coast owners have been added to our directory, including Rex Houchins of Montana, Dave and Robin Robbins of Tennessee, Earl Shaffer of Tennessee and Mike Thomas

John Schnetzler reports progress on the restoration of his rare center cockpit SC 26 -- look for pictures in the not-too-distant future.

Vinyl South Coast logos are available for $3 from Sid Rousseau. He needs a minimum order to proceed, so if you are interested please contact him right away. Sid

Updated 1/16/99 - Added new member Ben Fenwick. We also have a beautiful new photo on the home page of Bob Zanowicz's SC 22 under sail.

Updated December 21, 1999 - Merry Christmas, happy Hannukah, blessed Ramadan, happy Kwanzaa!

There are lots of new members for our list--from both coasts and inbetween, and even Canada, too--so please take a look at the email directory for a South Coast owner near you.

There are now 88 owners on our directory from 27 states and Canada. Models represented: SC 21 (4), SC 22 (61), SC 23 (13), SC 25 (3), SC 26 (7).

Several South Coasts have been placed in the "for sale" directory.

I have added pictures of the SC 25. That's a nice looking keel boat!

Gary Smith asks the following question regarding his SC 26. IF you can help, please email Gary.

"I would like to gain access to the fasteners on the underside of my forward deck fittings (cleats, nav. Lights, etc.). This could be easily done by removal of the anchor locker. It seems that the anchor locker is dropped in and sealed (no fasteners) around a top flange but I have not been willing to pry up on the flange to break it free for fear of cracking it. Has anyone ever tried this before or removed theirs? My only alternative is to drill large diameter holes in the sides of the locker and try to reach forward with necessary acrobatics and finesse. These holes could then be filled or covered with screw-in deck access plates. Any advice would be appreciated."

Updated 04/13/99 -

Our Southcoast owners group is growing--we are now 63 strong. Please take a few minutes to review the owners email directory--you may find a sistership near you. I estimate our number represents over 10% of the total Southcoast sailboats built!

The owner of SC 23 hull #1 has made contact! This is very exciting. Here is what Bill Normand has to say:

"My boat is named "Rose." I can't confirm that SC Seacraft actually began full production in 1960, only that this hull is the prototype and was produced that year....My No.1 is really different from ALL the others I've seen, especially in the quality and fit of the interior cabinetry. It looks to me like they were in a rush to complete the boat and possibly get it to a show or demo somewhere."

I will post more of Bill's story on the site in coming weeks.

Flotilla in May?

I will be cruising the Islands of Lake Erie during the week before Memorial Day weekend. Is anyone interested in making a flotilla? Bring your own boat or crew with me. There are lots of possiblities for cruising destinations or day trips including Put-in-Bay, Cedar Point, Pelee Island in Canada, Detroit, Cleveland, etc. The itinerary is flexible; the dates for me are flexible by a few days one way or the other.

So far Mark Fischer (SC 22 out of Traverse City, Michigan) and George Booth (SC 26 out of South Carolina) have expressed an interest in the trip. I would love to hear from others who might like some early season sailing. Please email me for more information. Rory

Updated 01/03/99

Greetings. As usual I offer the dual disclaimers that I am not a professional web master and I labor under constraints of a busy schedule.

The changes:

I have had the good fortune to make contact with the former chief engineer for South Coast, Jim Monroe. Based on our conversation, I have made updates to the home page and several other pages. The highlights include:

Updates to the email directory

The email list has been changed to accomodate an owner's photo. If you would like to submit a photo for the list, send the photo snail mail (with S.A.S.E. if you want it returned) or email a scanned photo ("jpg" only). My address: Rory Stauber, 124 College Park Dr., Barbourville KY 40906. The list of South Coast owners is growing. As of 01/03/99 there are 44 entries. Some of our newer members include:

Larry Gillikin, SC 22

Ricardo Jobin, SC 21

John Prevatte--who is also looking for information to help in the rebuilding process of his SC 22. If you can help, please send him an email.

I think there are other new members I forgot to note--so be sure to browse the email list to see who is new with your boat model or in your location.

For your information, there are boat owners representing 19 states. Those states with more than one owner are Texas (5), Michigan (4), Florida (3), Illinois (3), Wisconsin (2), Kentucky (2), Indiana (2), Colorado (2), Maryland (2), and Washington (2).

First Ever South Coast "Round Up" Took Place in August!!

It is a modest beginning, but SC 26 owners Terry and Mary Clark and son Trevor met myself and wife Cindy at Cave Run Lake near Morehead, Kentucky where the Clarks sail. We had a great time getting acquainted, inspecting each others' boats, going for a sailing tour of the lake on Upbeat, and sharing a cook-out with the local yacht club.

Here we are rafted up at Terry's mooring. The photo is taken from the bow of Upbeat. From left to right are Terry, Cindy, and Mary.

Our retractable keels allowed us to easily beach our twin South Coast boats at the picnic. Pictured on the ladder is Mary; Cindy is standing in Upbeat's cockpit.

Terry's boat remained beached overnight while I moved Upbeat to an anchorage. Was the fog ever thick the next morning! Trevor maintains watch on the bow as Terry carefully maneuvers his boat toward Upbeat.

Anyone interested in a South Coast "Round Up" on Lake Erie sometime in May?

While it seems unlikely we could muster a large crowd at a single round-up, smaller events like the one I had with the Clarks are more realistic. If anyone would like to take the initiative and organize a South Coast round-up in your area, I will do what I can to help out.

I will toss out the first possibility: Would anyone care to join me for a round-up on Lake Erie in May? The date is negotiable, but probably closer to the end of the month would be better than earlier (let's allow it to warm up a bit!). There is a good ramp with free parking available. Sailing destinations abound. We can kick around the islands for a relaxing time or cruise to Detroit, Pelee Island in Canada, or even Cleveland. If anyone is interested in going but you don't want to bring your boat, others may be able to take on crew. I may have space on my boat for one or two people.

Fair winds.

Rory Stauber
